Minimally Invasive Implantology
Factors for Long-Term Implant Preservation
Even once an implant has healed and been fitted with a prosthesis, careful and consistent care is essential. Below are the most important factors for long-term implant preservation.
1. Proper care
Thorough hygiene around the implant is recommended, as otherwise inflammation of the surrounding tissue can occur (so-called peri-implantitis). Numerous studies on this topic confirm the long-term success of implants with good hygiene. We therefore recommend:
- thorough at-home oral hygiene (brushing three times a day using aids such as dental floss or interdental brushes). We recommend using antibacterial rinses every two to three days, which significantly reduces pathogenic bacteria in the mouth.
- regular professional teeth cleanings. Only by removing bacterial deposits around the teeth, and if necessary from the gum pockets, is long-term implant success possible. Our prevention team will also advise you on individual hygiene measures and improvement tips. The frequency of such cleanings ("recall") must be agreed individually.
2. Regular check-ups
Even when healing and restoration of the implants has gone smoothly — meaning the implant has fused directly with the bone (so-called ankylosis) — regular check-ups should still take place.
- A check-up with us every six months is required, to monitor both your teeth and your implants.
