Laser Dentistry
The use of the laser (LASER = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) in dentistry has opened up entirely new treatment options. This high-energy, focused light is successfully applied across several fields of dentistry:
Cavity treatment:
When treating tooth decay, the laser can replace the drill, provided the cavity isn't too deep and isn't located at an existing filling. This allows especially anxious patients a more relaxed treatment, without drill noise or noticeable vibration. It is also less painful, since the laser's pulse duration is faster than pain perception.
Periodontal therapy:
Here, the laser detects bacterial deposits (calculus) in inflamed gum pockets via a "feedback mechanism" and removes them gently. This is a particularly gentle treatment method that avoids unnecessarily damaging healthy gum and root areas. The efficient removal of bacterial deposits during periodontal treatment leaves sterile root surfaces and helps prevent bad breath. These advantages are also used for inflammation around implants (peri-implantitis).
Root canal treatments:
The germ-killing effect of the laser beam can also be applied during root canal treatment. The beams reach even the smallest side branches of the root canals. Disinfecting these bacterial "hiding places" helps prevent reinfection of the treated root canals.
Surgery:
In dental surgery (e.g. during an apicoectomy), the laser is used because the subsequent healing process is shorter, thanks to the gentle, sterile action of the focused light beam.
