Modern Restorative Dentistry
Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treatment becomes necessary whenever the tooth's nerve is irreversibly damaged and can no longer heal. This so-called pulpitis (pulpa = dental pulp) is in most cases caused by deep decay. To still save the tooth, the "canal system" (endodont) of the tooth roots is treated. This usually requires several appointments. This field of dentistry deals with the preparation and disinfection of the root canals using special instruments and solutions. To make disinfection of the endodont as effective as possible, we use, alongside standard solutions, the laser or photodynamic therapy in some cases — depending on the extent of the nerve's inflammation. In every root canal treatment we also use a mechanical procedure with simultaneous computer-assisted measurement to check the root length. The goal is a hermetic seal of the entire root canal system via a root filling. Afterward, the tooth is restored individually (e.g. with a filling or CEREC) and is fully functional again.
