Children's Orthodontics

The earlier a tooth or jaw misalignment is identified, the more precisely it can be treated — often while the jaw is still growing and can be gently guided. We recommend a first orthodontic check-up around the age of 6 to 8, when the first permanent teeth erupt. Ellen Kappel, MSc., our orthodontics specialist, on the subject: In children and adolescents, we make targeted use of the jaw growth that is still underway. Common reasons for treatment include a narrow upper jaw, a crossbite, pronounced crowding, or an overbite/underbite. Depending on the diagnosis, we use removable plates, functional orthodontic appliances or — particularly in the second treatment phase once all permanent teeth are present — fixed braces. What matters most for treatment success is consistent wearing time for the appliances, along with regular check-ups where we review progress and adjust the appliance as needed. We take the time to explain to younger patients themselves why the treatment matters — because only those who understand why the brace is important will wear it reliably.
