Toothache rarely comes at a good time. Call us during opening hours at 030 3622074 and describe your symptoms. We will discuss with you how urgent treatment is.

Outside our opening hours

In the evening, at weekends and on public holidays the dental emergency service can help. The recorded announcement of the Berlin Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists, phone 030 89004-333, tells you which practice is on duty. The emergency services are also listed at kzv-berlin.de.

If swelling spreads, if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a high fever, please call the emergency number 112.

Common causes

Deep decay or an inflamed nerve

Throbbing pain, often at night, or strong sensitivity to heat. A root canal treatment often saves the tooth.

Inflammation at the root tip

Pain when biting or chewing, sometimes with swelling. Prompt treatment is important here.

Gums and wisdom teeth

Inflamed gums or an erupting wisdom tooth can be very painful. More under periodontitis treatment.

Broken tooth or lost filling

Sharp edges and exposed dentine are sensitive. A new filling or crown protects the tooth again.

What you can do yourself

  • Cool your cheek from the outside, for example with a cold pack wrapped in a cloth; no heat.
  • If needed, a common painkiller from the pharmacy can help. Ask the pharmacist and follow the package leaflet.
  • Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food on the affected side.
  • Do not place painkillers directly on the gums, as this can burn the mucosa.

Dental accident: tooth knocked out or broken

Hold the tooth only by the crown, not by the root, and do not clean it. Ideally keep it in a tooth rescue box from the pharmacy, or in cold UHT milk if necessary, and come to the practice or the emergency service as quickly as possible. The sooner the tooth is treated, the better the chances of saving it.

Afraid of treatment?

Fear of the dentist is often strongest when you are in pain. If you wish, we can treat you relaxed under nitrous oxide. More under anxious patients.
