Even with thorough brushing, you cannot reach every spot in your mouth. Bacterial deposits (plaque) build up between the teeth, along the gum line and in small niches, and harden into tartar over time. These deposits are the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease (periodontitis). Professional teeth cleaning removes them thoroughly and gently, making it the most important preventive care for healthy teeth, healthy gums and long-lasting implants.

How does a professional cleaning work?

At our practice, professional cleaning is carried out by a specially trained prophylaxis assistant. You are welcome to choose your preferred assistant.

  1. 1

    Examination

We first check your teeth and gums and, if needed, make deposits visible with a disclosing solution.

  2. 2

    Removing tartar and plaque

Hard and soft deposits are removed with ultrasound and fine hand instruments, including between the teeth and just below the gum line.

  3. 3

    Air polishing

Stains from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco are gently removed with a fine powder jet.

  4. 4

    Polishing

All tooth surfaces are then smoothed and polished so that new plaque adheres less easily.

  5. 5

    Fluoride

Finally, the enamel is strengthened with a fluoride varnish.

    Advice

You receive personal tips for your oral hygiene at home, such as brushing technique and cleaning between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes.

How often is professional cleaning advisable?

For most patients we recommend a professional cleaning once or twice a year. With a higher risk, for example after periodontal treatment, with implants, fixed braces or general conditions such as diabetes, shorter intervals may be advisable. We agree on the right schedule ("recall") together with you.

Who benefits most?

  • patients with implants, crowns and bridges, as inflammation around implants (peri-implantitis) is mainly caused by plaque. More under implant care.
  • before and after periodontal treatment
  • before bleaching, since whitening only works on clean teeth
  • during treatment with braces or Invisalign

Combine your appointment

Professional cleaning can easily be combined with your annual check-up, so you can take care of both in one visit. You can select this directly when requesting an appointment online.

What does it cost?

Professional teeth cleaning is usually a private service. Many private health insurers and supplementary insurances cover the costs in full or in part, and some statutory health insurers offer a subsidy. We are happy to advise you on the costs in your case.
